May calls talk of May, Van Pelt job security ‘some BS’ Originally published NBC Sports Boston
The job security of New England Patriots head coach Jarrod Mayo and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt has been the subject of much debate among the media and fans, especially over the past two weeks.
Should the Patriots go with the same head coach and coordinators in the 2025 campaign? Or want to make changes in the off-season.?
The topic generates plenty of heated opinions on both sides, and the conversation isn’t likely to die down anytime soon after the Patriots lost their fourth straight game on Sunday. 24-21 loss to the first place Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium.
One person who is clearly not a fan of the Mayo/Van Pelt job security talk is Patriots rookie quarterback Drake May.
He strongly defended the Patriots coaches during his postgame press conference.
“Just trying to stop the noise. I think the talk about our coaching staff and things like that, it’s some BS, to be quite honest,” Maye told reporters. “Coach Mayo, we’ve got his back. He’s coaching us hard. He wants to win, we all want to win. We’re all disappointed.
“AVP I think has been calling great (plays) the last (few) weeks, we’re just a (few) plays away. … I think that’s a testament to those guys that kept fighting. We’re not going to make the playoffs, and these guys are coming in and we’re not going to score in practice Playing who is yelling on the sideline And want to win.
“I think we’re building something good, building something that’s felt here. I’m proud to be a Patriot.”
It was the second time in the past week that May has defended Mayo and Van Pelt.
when Asked about Mayo on Wednesday“As players, we’re behind him and we’re backing him. We trust the plan he’s made for us and we trust what he’s doing in the team meeting rooms,” May said. I say and all the little things we believe in. It and we’re bought into it I think everyone wants us to be striving for, but it doesn’t work that way. Coming in the near future.”
The Patriots have the second-worst record in the league at 3-12, and if they don’t win another game, they will finish with a worse record than last season’s 4-13. The last time the Patriots won four or fewer games in back-to-back seasons was from 1967 to 1970.
The on-field performance has not been good enough this season. There is no denying it. But at the same time, this roster is terrible — maybe even the worst in the league. It’s hard to imagine any coach in pro football winning more than four or five games with this roster. There are massive weaknesses at key positions such as left tackle, wide receiver, edge rusher and cornerback.
The coaching staff bears a lot of the blame for what happened this season. But unless the Patriots make significant improvements, the losing streak will continue through 2025.
