Liverpool manager Arne Slot defends Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglu’s attacking tactics

Liverpool manager Arne Slot says he hopes his Tottenham team-mate Ange Postecoglou wins the trophy as a reward for his attacking style of football.

Spurs are 10th in the Premier League after an inconsistent campaign and, although Postecoglou has been criticized for his side’s tactics this season, he recently said “in hard times you double down on your principles”.

Slot was heavily linked with taking over as Tottenham manager in 2023 before remaining at Feyenoord, taking his team to play the London club on Sunday (16:30 GMT).

Liverpool are also set to face Spurs in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, with Tottenham qualifying after rollercoaster 4-3 win against Manchester United.

“It’s a great job that Ange is doing. I hope, I hope, I hope that (Postecoglou) will win the cup – not the League Cup but I’m a fan of his team for the Europa League,” said Slot.

“People talk about titles, titles, titles and that is very important. For me, his brand of football is more important.

“If he can combine and win something that will be good for football in general because then people can stop talking about ‘is it too attacking?’ How can you play the most attacking football in the world?”

Slot added: “I think it’s a great opportunity to be a season ticket holder at Tottenham and to be a fan of them at the moment because they’re playing a really good style.”

Tottenham are the second highest scorers in the Premier League this season with 36 goals – just one behind Chelsea – having won seven and lost seven of 16 in the Premier League.

“I really have to give them credit,” said Slot. “They have always been a certain type of football for me and a certain identity and Ange Postecoglou gives them that identity completely.

“Every time, it’s a pleasure to watch them. Every once in a while the results are the opposite but I think they are one of the teams to beat Manchester City like us.”
