Kick It Out: Higher records of discrimination and increased sexuality, transphobia, and abuse of faith during 2024-25

Anti-apartheid prohibition says it received high discrimination reports during the 2024-25 season and increased sexuality, transphobia and abuse of faith.

At all English football levels last season, there were 1,398 cases reported – from 1,332 published in last season’s figures – and ever received by the organization.

Sexual and misogyny reports increased by 67%, and reports increased from 115 in the 2023-24 season to 192.

The basic abuse of faith increased from 117 to 132, while transphobia reports increased 22 to 44 times.

Reports involving girls football have doubled to 31, plus two at the minimum 9 years, while the total youth reports increased from 144 to the top 186 record.

General reports of racism fell at all levels of football, but the number of discriminatory events in a specialist game increased from 223 to 245.

Kick It Out was also found in its last season’s reporting statistics:

  • There were 621 reports of abuses presented – 5% increase last year – and 268 related to racism.

  • There were 18 reports of the sexual song received by 2024-25, which almost equal to the total from the last four seasons together.

  • Grassroots football continued with 325 reports – from 303 in 2023-24.

  • Homophobic abuse fell slightly, down from reports 162 to 139.

  • Disabled abuse also had a significant increase, with high reports by 45% at all levels of the game from 51 to 76.

External chief executive Samuel Okafor said “Discrimination remains highly incorporated into the game”, and the increase in abuse in youth football “should be a call to wake up”.

Okafor acknowledged there has been a “clear change” for people “calling sexual behavior”, but he wants to see a great deal of action against abuse.

“It is clear that the platforms are still diminishing. The amount of abuse remains high, and often those responsible have no effect,” Okafor said.

“Fans are doing their part in talking. Now it’s about football leaders, technology and government companies showing that they are listening, and taking action.”
