Wells Indian campaign Cameron Norrie ended in the third round with a straight-set defeat by Hope Tommy Paul’s house.
Norrie number two England claimed his biggest career in the California tournament in 2021 but was defeated 6-3 7-5 with 10th seed Paul.
Paul will play Russia’s fifth seed Daniil Medvedev or Alex Michelsen, another American, next.
“It was a very strange match, a lot of rest,” said World Number 11.
“I started pretty well and tried to play aggressive tennis. It was a match up and down on both sides.”
In their first meeting since 2022, the two players struggled to serve in the first set.
Norrie, ranked 77th in the world, was broken three times before handing over the opening Paul with a double error at the second set point.
In the second set, he again found himself decomposed on 4-2, but level up before leading 0-30 in Paul’s service.
Paul fought back before taking advantage of serving Norrie’s mistakes, the British admitted the match with the fifth double mistake of the set and seven matches.
Norrie’s defeat means Jack Draper is the only British hope that remains in a men’s singles draw in Indian Wells, with the 13th seed arranged to face American Jenson Brooksby on Monday.
At the women’s single, Katie Boulter number one England played a role in fighting former Wimbledon Kazakhstan champion and seventh seed Elena Rybakina.
Previously, the defending champion Iga Sweatek -pursuing a third title in succession in Indian Wells -dominated Dayana Yastremska 6-0 6-2.
