F -One Summer Shutdown: What is it, when is it and what are the rules?


Summer closure, the governing body of Formula 1 has been implemented by the FIA, which is an essential 14 -day period where all rivals and their staff are forbidden to work.

Over the past two weeks, teams may not be able to do car performance – it includes design, development, parts manufacture and use of simulators – so no one gets unfair advantage.

Emails, phone calls and meetings about the performances are also prohibited, and the costs are removed due to breaks.

Teams will have to inform the FIA about their desired shutdown period during the summer break, which comes between the Hungarian Grand Prix and the end of the month at the beginning of August this year.

Teams choose two weeks, which allows to define and prepare for the next after the previous race.

With the approval of the FIA, cars can be repaired during the shutdown “severe damage” cars.

During the shutdown, the breaker of these principles will also be fined.

However, the departments are not directly related to car performance and development – such as marketing, finance and legal – can continue to work as usual during this period.

The second shutdown of nine consecutive days at the end of the season, which began on December 24, is the second shutdown.
