The Chicago Blackhawks won three straight for the first time in the Connor Bedard era with their victory over the Seattle Kraken on Thursday. On Saturday, they hit the road to play the Calgary Flames looking for a fourth straight.
Things didn’t start well for Chicago as Calgary took a 2-0 lead in the first half and took it into the break. Another high-scoring comeback was needed if the Hawks wanted to make it four in a row. They had one of those already in the lead.
In the second half, Connor Bedard scored to put Chicago on the board and within one. This was a great shot after Taylor Hall found him on a spectacular two-on-one pass. Bedard is now 30 goals ahead of Patrick Kane (29) for the second most goals scored by a rookie in franchise history.
Throughout the second half, the Flames scored three unanswered to make it 5-1. At the time, it looked like the Hawks were unlikely to win. That being said, this team doesn’t give up no matter what the score is.
In the first minute of the third period, Tyler Bertuzzi scored to make it 5-2. The pressure increased until he was able to score the second goal of the game at 11:30 in the final frame.
Connor Bedard assisted on both Bertuzzi goals. That left three points for Bedard who has 29 points in 34 games he played. That’s incredible production for a 19-year-old player, who is the second youngest in the NHL.
To make things interesting, Ilya Mikheyev scored a goal at 18:52 that got the Hawks within one goal (5-4). Mikheyev has scored in four consecutive games. Like all of his other goals lately, Teuvo Teravainen assisted on it to give him another two-point effort.
Calgary ended up putting one into an empty net which gave them a 6-4 win. The Hawks couldn’t get a win to make it four in a row but Bedard had a great night along with other Blackhawks standouts.
It has been said before and it will be said again. Right now, wins and losses don’t matter to the Hawks this season. Would it be nice to win more? Of course. The long-term value is in developing players to get the most out of them.
Since Anders Sorensen took over, we’ve started to see some of them succeed at the NHL level. Young players and veterans have found the field with more frequency.
The Blackhawks now have one more game before the holiday break. They will stop at St. Paul on Monday to take on the Minnesota Wild for a divisional matchup. Coming off another big offensive game in Calgary, Connor Bedard and the Blackhawks have to believe their team is going to the next game.
