Pius The Key to the Canucks Puzzle

One of the main reasons Vancouver lost tonight was that their leading players couldn’t execute the offense. Elias Pettersson, Jake DeBrusk and Brock Boeser each finished with one shot, while JT Miller failed to find a single puck in the net. Unfortunately, this trend is not new, as the Canucks’ top players have struggled over the past few weeks.

While the top six was disappointing, Vancouver’s fourth line was not as Blueger, Kiefer Sherwood, and Danton Heinen had solid games. Blueger scored the Canucks’ only goal of the game and was tied for the team lead with four shots, while Sherwood and Heinen both created scoring chances during the shutout. Ultimately, the fourth line was Vancouver’s best in the game from start to finish.

As for Lankinen, he put in another solid performance but will be looking to get Vegas’ first goal back. Although every shot has a chance to go in, you rarely see raw scores that go beyond the winners. Despite the questionable goal against, this was another in a long line of impressive performances as Lankinen kept the score close until the final buzzer.

Arguably, the biggest story in this game was Rick Tocchet’s decision to keep Miller and Pettersson on separate power play units for the third straight game. While it worked against the Utah Hockey Club the other night, it didn’t work tonight, as the power play went 0/2 while generating two shots on goal. Whatever the reason for separating the two, it has a negative impact on the power play and needs to be sorted out sooner rather than later.

While the Canucks had a strong first half, they looked tired in the second and third periods, which ultimately cost them against the Golden Knights. They were solid defensively, but their inability to create any offensive opportunities, especially late in the game, is the reason they left Vegas with a loss. With two more games before the holiday break, the hope is that Vancouver can jump big Saturday night at Rogers Arena.
