Alex Greenwood: Manchester City captain undergoes ‘successful’ knee surgery

Manchester City captain Alex Greenwood has undergone “successful” knee surgery, the club say.

The 31-year-old was stretcher release during the first half of City’s Champions League win over St Polten last week.

Greenwood looked uncomfortable after coming off the pitch following a bad challenge from St Polten forward Melanie Brunnthaler.

Club at first they were afraid the England defender suffered a tear of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) but it turned out that the full-back injured the Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL), which usually has a short recovery time.

City have not set a timetable for Greenwood’s return but said he will now return to the club to work closely with the medical team on his recovery.

“Not the end of 2024 that I had planned,” Greenwood wrote on Instagram, accompanying a picture of himself in the hospital.

“I will do my best to get back on the field as soon as I can.”

Greenwood, who played 96 times for England, has played 16 times for City this season.

City are second in the Women’s Premier League (WSL), six points behind leaders and defending champions Chelsea.
