Wildcard Victoria Mboko won her first WTA title by coming from behind to defeat the Grand Slam champion four times Naomi Osaka in the Canadian open final.
For the second successive match, the 18-year-old Canada had to show endurance after conceding the opening set but rose to win 2-6 6-4 6-1.
Mboko started the 333th rank year in the world but was projected to rise to 34 after a pleasant victory of his crowd.
“I am very happy to be able to play at Montreal for the first time. I just remember feeling nervous, but really take as much as I can,” said Mboko.
“When I won my first half, I was very happy and very satisfied. I will never think that I will reach the final, let alone win the tournament.
“I have so many emotions that pass through my head, I can’t even express it.”
Mboko defeated four Grand Slam champions on his way to collect titles in front of 11,000 spectators.
